Monogenic diabetes is caused by mutations, or changes, in a single gene. These changes are usually passed through families, but sometimes the gene mutation happens on its own. Most of these gene mutations cause diabetes The increased incidence of diabetes in heterozygotes for some of these genetic disorders raises the possibility that many common diabetics are, in fact, heterozygotes for some other disorder. The increased frequency of diabetes in Klinefelter's syndrome, Turner's syndrome and possibly Down's syndrome leads to the hypothesis that non-disjunction may, in some way be associated with the Type 1 diabetes is a disorder characterized by abnormally high blood sugar levels. In this form of diabetes, specialized cells in the pancreas called beta cells stop producing insulin . Insulin controls how much glucose (a type of sugar) is passed from the blood into cells for conversion to energy.

Neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus, which is partly hereditary and genetic, but Diabetesgenes.org aims to provide information for patients and professionals on genetic types of diabetes. It includes details of research, clinical care and educational opportunities along with information to aid differential diagnosis of diabetes to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment of these genetic subtypes. We welcome samples from any patient diagnosed with diabetes and at least one additional autoimmune disorder before the age of five years, no matter what their age is now. In patients without a mutation, gene discovery studies by whole genome sequencing may be employed in order to find the aetiological cause of their disease. 2008-02-12 · I have to do a project on a genetic disorder and I was hoping to do it on diabetes, but I'm not sure if it's a genetic disorder.
